Evan and Gabi had their first games of baseball and softball this weekend. It was cold and windy but we had a great day. Evan's game was first at 9:00. He plays at the little league complex right up the road behind their school. So he and Chad walked up at 8:30 for warm ups. I brought the other two up for the game. In both of their leagues the coaches pitch. Each player on each team gets a chance to hit in each inning. After everyone has had a turn they switch teams.
In Evan's league they get 5 pitches and then then they have to hit off the Tee. The coaches are instructed to throw the ball overhand. The games all last exactly one hour, so they play until that point. This week they only got through 2 1/2 innings. His team was home so they only batted twice. He had a great game for his first time ever! He started out playing third, so he got to field the ball a couple times and did well.

His next two positions were both in the outfield though so he never touched the ball again.

His first time up to bat he made great contact.

But he kept hitting it foul. So after his five pitches he had to hit off the tee which he did well. His second time up he hit it to the first baseman. No matter how well (or poorly) they hit the ball, everyone gets a single and they stay on the bases until one batter at a time moves them around to home. The last batter runs all the bases as if he hit a home run.

In Gabi's league, the girls get a chance to pitch. The pitcher pitches two balls and then the coach takes over for each batter. Gabi made good contact each time up to bat.

She just needs to swing a little harder. In her league they play for three innings or two hours whichever comes first. This weekend they were able to make it through the three innings in a little under the two hours. One funny moment during the game, the pitcher bounced the ball to the plate and the little girl golfed it all the way to second base. So they let her run. It was cute. Gabi played third base most of the game and did well the few times the ball came to her.

They just need to work on what to do once the ball is fielded. She kept forgetting to cover third and almost got hit in the head a couple times. She played catcher the last inning.

I was very impressed with both the kids and they both seemed to have a lot of fun!
