Cross Country Day 19

We left Cody this morning headed for Yellowstone. The weather looked as though it might storm but as I am getting used to here, it is sunny where you are and then the storms come quickly and pass by.

At the entrance to the park we stopped and took some pictures with the sign. There was a couple there and we took pix of them and they of us. The kids liked the sign. Then as we went through the park we went on a bear hunt. As the kids started to get bored, I promised $5 to the first one to find an animal. That got their attention. The only animals we saw were a herd of Bison and a herd of Elk. They had already seen buffalo and the elk looked like deer so the animals were not all that impressive to them.

We stopped at Yellowstone Lake for a picnic lunch. There was a beautiful pebble beach. The kids put on their suits and waded around. The all even tried swimming, but it was COLD. They skipped rocks and threw rocks and collected shiny rocks (which we put back when the ranger came by and said they couldn't take them).

We went on but didn't stop at fishing bridge or the hot springs, because it was raining. As we got higher we saw white stuff on the grass we thought was hail. As we went higher we thought sleet. Then we realized as the temp dropped under 40 that it was snow. Pops actually got a little worried as the snow got a couple inches deep on the road. There were cars and especially motorcycles pulled off the road everywhere. As we went down the mountain the snow got lighter and then changed back to rain. When we reached Old Faithful the sun was shining and it was 60 degrees. We watched her blow and then went shopping and snacking. As we were leaving it was time again so we watched again. We then drove on out of the park and came on to the campground. By the time we were settled it was 9:00 so we stayed put and had a campfire dinner and dessert of hot dogs and smores.
